Afrin is an aerosol preparation suitable for use in adults and children over 6 years of age for the symptomatic treatment of nasal obstruction. The active substance of the preparation is oxymetazoline hydrochloride. The preparation constricts the blood vessels in the nose, thus relieving a stuffy nose.
Afrin works within minutes and lasts for several hours. The preparation is intended for use in the treatment of nasal congestion symptoms caused by hay fever, colds and sinusitis.
Afrin 500 mcg / ml is used in:
symptomatic treatment of nasal obstruction in the course of hay fever, colds and sinusitis in adults and children over 6 years of age.
1 ml of Afrin 500 mcg / ml contains:
Drain the nose.
Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Adults and children over 10 years of age: 1-2 sprays in each nostril every 12 hours.
Children from 6 to 10 years of age: 1 spray in each nostril every 12 hours.
The dose may be repeated no sooner than after 12 hours.
Afrin should not be used more than twice a day.
Do not exceed the recommended doses.
Do not use for more than 3 days, unless directed by a doctor.
Re-administration of the product may take place after a few days' break in its use.
Afrin should not be used:
Store the preparation below 25 ° C, out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not refrigerate or freeze.
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Side effects, if any, are temporary and are usually of moderate intensity.
Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all the preparations taken by the patient now or recently, and about the preparations that the patient plans to take.
Concomitant use of tricyclic antidepressants, maprotiline, other decongestants or monoamine oxidase inhibitors may increase the blood pressure increasing effect of oxymetazoline.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Afrin should only be used during pregnancy after consulting a doctor.
Caution should be exercised in patients with hypertension or symptoms of reduced placental perfusion. Frequent or prolonged use of high doses may reduce placental perfusion.
It is not known whether Afrin passes into breast milk. Due to the lack of sufficient data, the preparation should not be used during breastfeeding.
There are no data on the effect of the preparation on male and female fertility.
Driving vehicles and operating machinery
The preparation has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
Afrin contains benzalkonium chloride and propylene glycol
Benzalkonium chloride can cause irritation or swelling inside the nose, especially if used for a long time.
The preparation contains 100 mg of propylene glycol in each ml. Propylene glycol may cause skin irritation.
