Symptomatic treatment of nasal obstruction associated with hay fever, colds and sinusitis.
Oxymetazoline hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic preparation which causes local narrowing of the blood vessels in the nasal mucosa, reducing nasal obstruction. The pharmaceutical form of Afrin ND is described as a "No-Drip formulation" because when sprayed, the solution becomes more viscous and therefore stays more efficiently on the mucosa at the spray site compared to a standard 4-phase aqueous solution . Clinical trials show that the effect of oxymetazoline begins within minutes after administration and lasts up to 12 hours.
Oxymetazoline hydrochloride is administered directly to the nasal mucosa and acts locally to constrict blood vessels.
Adults and children> 10 years of age: 1-2 sprays in each nostril every 12 hours. Children 6-10 years of age: 1 spray in each nostril every 12 hours. Adults should not use more than 8 sprays (in children, not more than 4 sprays) in any 24 hours.
