The sun is a natural source of vitamin D, but the latest scientific studies show that dietary supplements are a better way to supplement deficiencies of this vitamin. Using a computer simulation, it is possible to estimate how much sunlight is needed to produce the amount of vitamin D in the blood within 400 or 1000 IU (10 or 25 g). Scientists from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute of Air Research, concluded that these calculations should take into account variable factors such as geographic location, season, and skin type (complexion). This multitude of factors, coupled with the fact that increased sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer, led scientists to conclude that the safest way to supplement vitamin D is through dietary supplements.
