Product description

The active substance of Folik is folic acid, which is a B vitamin. The need for folic acid increases during pregnancy and during breastfeeding, the diet may be an insufficient source of folic acid during the period of increased demand.

Indications

Folik is used for:

• prevention of folic acid deficiency in women before conception and in the early stages of pregnancy,
• reducing the risk of neural tube defects in the offspring.

Composition

1 tablet contains:

• active substance: folic acid 0.4 mg,
• other ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, maize starch, magnesium stearate, calcium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous, colloidal anhydrous silica, Maracuja flavor.

Action

Supplementing the deficiency of folic acid in the body, preventing the occurrence of birth defects in the fetus.

Dosage

The usual dose is one tablet once a day, for at least one month before conception and during the first trimester (first 3 months).

The tablets are best taken with a meal with water.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to folic acid or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Storage

The preparation should be stored below 25 ° C, out of the sight and reach of children.

Store in the original package in order to protect from light.

Side effects

Uncommon side effects (may affect at least 1 in 1,000 people):

• allergic skin reactions (rash, itching).

Rare side effects (may affect at least 1 in 10,000 people):

• a bitter taste in the mouth
• flatulence
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• diarrhea,
• lack of appetite
• difficulty falling asleep
• somnolence,
• excessive nervous excitability,
• depression.

Very rare side effects (may affect less than 1 in 10,000 people):

• angioedema

Interactions

The effect of Folik may be reduced by using:

• oral contraceptives (containing estrogens),
• anti-tuberculosis preparations,
• alcohol and ion exchange resins.

The effect of Folik may be reduced, but by a different mechanism, while using:

• preparations known as folic acid antagonists (sulfonamides, trimethoprim, pyrimethamine, sulfasalazine) 
• anti-cancer preparations (methotrexate).

Taking Folik together with the following preparations may reduce their effectiveness, leading to recurrence of seizures:

• anticonvulsants (phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone).

Warnings and Precautions

Except during pregnancy and lactation, folic acid should not be used in doses higher than 0.4 mg per day. Without first ruling out megaloblastic anemia by the doctor.

Women who have had a baby with a birth defect of the nervous system are at an increased risk of having another baby with the defect. They should get a genetic counseling before their next pregnancy. Such women should use folic acid at least three months before a planned pregnancy, in doses of 4 to 5 mg per day.
