Intestifag is a potent biological preparation containing a polyvalent complex of sterile filtrates of bacterial phagolysates. Specifically engineered to combat the most common causes of acute intestinal infections, it serves as a sophisticated alternative or adjunct to traditional antibiotic therapy. By utilizing the natural predatory nature of bacteriophages, Intestifag identifies and destroys pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella and Shigella with molecular precision. This targeted approach is particularly valuable in gastroenterology, as it clears the infection without disturbing the delicate balance of the intestinal microbiome, thereby preventing the secondary complications often associated with broad-spectrum antimicrobial use.

    Composition and Active Substance

Intestifag is a liquid solution composed of purified filtrates of phagolysates from the following bacterial strains:

    • Active Substances: Shigella flexneri (serotypes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6) and Shigella sonnei; Salmonella (typhimurium, enteritidis, heidelberg, infantis, newport, choleraesuis, oranienburg, dublin, anatum); Escherichia coli; Proteus (vulgaris and mirabilis); Staphylococcus aureus; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; and Enterococcus.

    • Excipients: The solution is stabilized in a physiological saline medium and may contain 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate or Merthiolate as a preservative to maintain biological integrity.

    Pharmacological Action

The efficacy of Intestifag is rooted in the bacteriolytic cycle. Bacteriophages are viruses that exclusively infect bacterial cells.

    1. Specificity: Each phage in the Intestifag cocktail is programmed to recognize specific receptors on the surface of pathogenic gut bacteria.

    2. Infection: Upon contact, the phage injects its genetic material into the pathogen.

    3. Lysis: The bacterium is converted into a factory for producing new phages. Eventually, the bacterial cell wall ruptures (lyses), releasing hundreds of new phage particles to continue the hunt for remaining pathogens. This process is self-limiting: once the specific pathogenic bacteria are cleared from the intestines, the phages are naturally eliminated from the body. Because phages do not recognize human cells or beneficial bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, the patient’s natural immunity and gut health remain intact.

    Indications for Use

Intestifag is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of gastrointestinal diseases caused by susceptible bacteria:

    • Acute Infections: Shigellosis (dysentery), salmonellosis, and foodborne toxicoinfections.

    • Inflammatory Conditions: Gastroenterocolitis, enterocolitis, and cholecystitis.

    • Microbiome Recovery: Treatment of intestinal dysbiosis (imbalance of flora) following antibiotic use or illness.

    • Prophylaxis: Prevention of hospital-acquired infections or during outbreaks in group settings.

    Contraindications

    • Hypersensitivity: Known allergy to the preservative (8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate) or any component of the bacterial filtrate.

    • Note: There are no other known medical contraindications, making it suitable for high-risk patients who may not tolerate antibiotics well.

    Dosage and Administration

Intestifag is administered orally or rectally. For optimal results, oral doses should be taken 1 hour before meals.

    • Adults and Children over 8 years: 20-30 ml orally, 2-3 times a day.

    • Children 3-8 years: 15-20 ml orally, 2-3 times a day.

    • Children 1-3 years: 10-15 ml orally, 2-3 times a day.

    • Infants (6-12 months): 5-10 ml orally or 10-20 ml via high enema.

    • Newborns (0-6 months): 5 ml orally or 10 ml via high enema.

    Special Administration Tips

If the infection is severe or chronic, combining oral intake with a daily rectal enema is highly recommended. For infants, the solution can be mixed with a small amount of expressed breast milk or formula if oral administration is difficult.

    Side Effects and Adverse Reactions

Intestifag is exceptionally safe. No serious adverse reactions have been documented. In rare cases, patients may experience:

    • Short-term Dyspepsia: A mild, temporary increase in gas or stool frequency during the first 24 hours as the bacteria are lysed.

    • Local Reactions: If used topically for skin issues related to the gut, mild redness may occur.

    Special Precautions & Warnings

    • Refrigeration: The most critical aspect of using Intestifag is maintaining the cold chain. Heat quickly deactivates the bacteriophages.

    • Transparency Check: Before pouring a dose, hold the bottle to the light. The liquid must be clear. If it appears cloudy, contains sediment, or has an unusual odor, do not use it.

    • Antibiotic Use: Intestifag can be safely used alongside antibiotics. In many cases, it helps eliminate persister cells that antibiotics might miss.

    Storage Conditions and Shelf Life

    • Temperature: Must be stored in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C.

    • Protection: Keep the bottle in its original carton to protect it from light.

    • Shelf Life: 2 years from the date of manufacture. Once opened under sterile conditions (using a syringe through the stopper), the contents should be used within 10-15 days.

    • Keep out of reach of children.
