Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide, which after oral administration is not broken down by digestive enzymes and is practically not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. In the large intestine, under the influence of bacteria, lactulose is broken down into organic acids, mainly lactic acid, which leads to acidification of the colon contents. The breakdown products of lactulose increase the volume of the intestine, stimulate peristalsis and have a laxative effect.
