In adults, the enzyme lactase allows you to fully include milk, dairy products and products containing milk sugar lactose in the diet, and helps to eliminate symptoms of lactose intolerance, such as discomfort in the intestines, increased gas and bloating, and unstable stools.
Lactose (milk sugar) is the primary sugar found in all types of milk, composed of two molecules: glucose and galactose. Glucose is the main source of energy for a child, and galactose is necessary for the synthesis of galactocerebrosides, which are required for the normal development of the brain and retina in the first months of a child's life. For the absorption of these molecules in the intestine, lactose must be previously cleaved (hydrolyzed) by the enzyme lactase, which is produced on the apical surface of the villi of the small intestine. When this enzyme is absent or produced in insufficient quantities, lactose is not hydrolyzed, which leads to lactose intolerance or so-called lactase deficiency, which is manifested by intestinal colic. In young children, lactase deficiency may be due to the "immaturity" of the intestinal enzymatic systems, insufficient production of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down milk sugar (lactose).
