Indications and action

Aleric Spray contains mometasone furoate, which belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids. Nasal mometasone furoate relieves symptoms of inflammation (swelling and irritation of the nasal mucosa), sneezing, itching and nasal congestion and reduces nasal discharge.

Aleric Spray is used to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (also known as hay fever) in adults aged 18 years and over, who have been diagnosed by a doctor.

Hay fever is characterized by symptoms such as watery, runny nasal discharge and a stuffy nose with irritation and swelling of the mucosa (which may be accompanied by watery and itchy eyes), occurring at certain times of the year, and is an allergic reaction caused by inhaling allergens (pollen from trees, grasses, weeds, as well as mold and fungus spores) and may persist as long as the allergen remains in the environment. Individual allergens appear in similar periods of the year, so the occurrence of allergic rhinitis can be predicted (e.g. based on the dustiness calendar).

Aleric Spray reduces the swelling and irritation of the nasal mucosa, thereby relieving sneezing, itching, nasal congestion or nasal discharge caused by hay fever.

Composition

The active substance is mometasone furoate.

Each delivered dose contains 50 micrograms of mometasone furoate as mometasone furoate monohydrate.

The other ingredients are: benzalkonium chloride, solution, glycerol, polysorbate 80, microcrystalline cellulose and sodium carmellose, citric acid monohydrate, sodium citrate, purified water.

Dosage

Adults:

The usual dose is two sprays in each nostril once a day. When you feel better, you can reduce the dose: use one spray in each nostril once a day. This dose should be effective for maintenance treatment

If, after a maximum of 14 days of using the preparation, the patient does not feel better or feels worse, contact your doctor

Contraindications

Do not use Aleric Spray:

if you are allergic to mometasone furoate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine

if you have an untreated infection of the nose

Using Aleric Spray during an untreated infection in the nasal cavity, such as herpes, may worsen the symptoms of the infection. You should wait until the infection is treated before you use the nasal spray.

if you have recently had nasal surgery or trauma to the nose

You should not use the nasal spray until your nose has healed

in children and adolescents under 18 years of age

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Immediate hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions of an unknown frequency may occur after taking this medicine. These reactions can be serious.

Stop taking Aleric Spray and seek medical help immediately if you experience symptoms, such as:

• swelling of the face, tongue or throat
• swallowing problems
• hives
• wheezing or difficulty breathing.

When corticosteroids nasal spray are taken in high doses over a long period of time, side effects may be due to the preparation being absorbed into the body.

Other side effects

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)

• Headache
• sneezing
• bleeding from the nose (this has been very common (may affect more than 1 in 10 people) in patients with nasal polyps who used two doses in each nostril twice a day)
• irritated nose or throat, sore throat
• ulceration of the nasal mucosa
• upper respiratory tract infection.

Not known (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data):

• increase in pressure in the eye (glaucoma) and / or cataracts causing visual disturbances
• damage to the nasal septum that separates the nostrils
• changes in taste and smell
• blurred vision
