Product description 

Ascofer are coated tablets used to replenish iron deficiency in the body.

Dosage

Adults

Therapeutic: usually 2 film-coated tablets three times a day with or after food; in severe deficiencies 2 coated tablets 4 times a day.

Preventive: approximately 60 mg iron (3 film-coated tablets) daily in divided doses.

Use in children

Treatment in children over 3 years of age: 4 to 6 mg iron per kg body weight per day in divided doses.

Preventive: 2 mg per kg body weight daily in divided doses.

Achieving the full therapeutic effect requires regular and long-term use.

Composition

The active substance is iron (II) gluconate in a dose of 200 mg, corresponding to 23.2 mg of iron ions. 1 film-coated tablet contains 200 mg of iron (II) gluconate.

The other ingredients (excipients) are: ascorbic acid, talc, potato starch, stearic acid, propylene glycol and Aqua Polish P red coating composed of: hypromellose, hydroxypropylcellulose, macrogol, triglycerides of medium chain saturated fatty acids, talc, titanium dioxide ( E171), Allura red AC, lake (E 129), black iron oxide (E 172), red iron oxide (E 172).

Indications

The preparation is indicated for use in: conditions of iron deficiency associated with blood loss, increased demand for iron (in children during intensive growth, during pregnancy and breastfeeding) and conditions associated with malabsorption or a diet containing too little iron.

Contraindications

- if you are allergic to the active substance or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);

- if you suffer from blood diseases: haemosiderosis, haemochromatosis (hereditary diseases characterized by increased absorption and excess iron deposition in internal organs), haemolytic anemia (reduction in the number of red blood cells due to the shortening of their life span) and aplastic anemia (reduction of due to bone marrow failure), proliferative diseases (blood cancer);

- if you have had multiple blood transfusions (transfusions);

- if you are receiving other medicines containing iron as intravenous drips;

- if you suffer from late cutaneous porphyria (a disease caused by the abnormal production of heme, a component of hemoglobin)

- if you have gastrointestinal malabsorption;

- if you have cirrhosis of the liver.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Gastrointestinal disorders:

Diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, upper abdominal pain.

Warnings and Precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Ascofer.

- the recommended doses of the preparation should not be exceeded, especially in children;

- do not use Ascofer yourself if you suspect you have iron deficiency (this should be confirmed);

- do not use iron-containing medications on your own for long periods without doctor's advice, as this can lead to harmful build-up of excess iron in the body

- tell your doctor if you have hepatitis or liver dysfunction, kidney disease, inflammation of the intestines or an active stomach and / or duodenal ulcer

- the use of this medicine may make the stools black, due to the presence of unabsorbed iron; it does not affect the effectiveness of the preparation and does not endanger your health;

- elderly people are at increased risk of side effects.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.
