Pharmacological properties

Xylometazoline is a sympathomimetic agent that acts on α-adrenergic receptors.

The preparation causes a narrowing of the nasal blood vessels, reducing the swelling of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses, thereby improving nasal breathing with nasal congestion and sinus congestion.

The action of the preparation begins a few minutes after application and lasts up to 12 hours.

When applied topically, the preparation is practically not absorbed, the concentration of xylometazoline in the blood plasma is so low that it cannot be determined using modern analytical methods.

Indications

Symptomatic treatment of nasal congestion with colds, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis. to facilitate the outflow of secretions in diseases of the paranasal sinuses. as an auxiliary therapy for otitis media (to eliminate swelling of the mucous membrane). to facilitate rhinoscopy.

Application

Before the administration of the preparation, the nasal cavity should be thoroughly cleaned.

Eucabal drops and Eucabal spray. Adults and children over the age of 12 years 2-3 times a day, 2-3 drops or 1 injection into each nasal passage. The duration of treatment depends on the course of the disease and should not exceed 10 days in a row.

Eucabal drops for children. For children aged 2-5 years, the preparation should be used under the supervision of adults, 1-2 drops in each nostril 1-2 times a day.

Children aged 6-11 years should use the preparation under the supervision of adults, 2-4 drops in each nostril 2-3 times a day.

Should not be used more than 3 times a day.

The duration of treatment depends on the course of the disease and should not exceed 7 days in a row.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation, dry inflammation of the nasal mucosa (dry rhinitis), acute coronary diseases, hyperthyroidism, angle-closure glaucoma, transphenoidal hypophysectomy and surgery with exposure of the meninges in history. concomitant treatment with MAO inhibitors and within 2 weeks after discontinuation of their use.

Side effects

From the immune system: hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema, rash, itching.

From the nervous system: headache.

From the side of the organ of vision: transient visual impairment.

From the heart: irregular or rapid heartbeat.

On the part of the respiratory system, chest and mediastinum: dryness or discomfort on the part of the nasal mucosa, burning sensation.

From the gastrointestinal tract: nausea.

General disorders and reactions at the injection site: burning sensation at the site of application.

Special instructions

The preparation eucabal drops and eucabal spray are not used in children under the age of 12; eucabal drops for children - not used in children under the age of 2 years, use in children aged 2-11 is recommended only under the supervision of adults. the preparation should not be used for more than 7-10 days in a row. long-term treatment with the preparation can cause the opposite effect. the preparation should be prescribed with caution to patients who, when using adrenergic preparations, experience strong reactions that manifest themselves in the form of insomnia, dizziness, tremors, arrhythmias, increased blood pressure.

Do not exceed the recommended dose of the preparation, especially when treating children and the elderly.

The preparation should be prescribed with caution to patients with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, and difficulty urinating.

Each pack of drops / spray can only be used by one person to avoid infection.

Use during pregnancy and lactation. The preparation should not be used during pregnancy due to its vasoconstrictor effect.

There is no evidence of side effects in breastfed infants. It is not known whether xylometazoline passes into breast milk, so caution should be exercised in women who are breastfeeding. The preparation can be used only when the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the child, as recommended by the doctor.

Fertility There is no adequate data on the effect of the preparation on fertility. Since systemic exposure to xylometazoline hydrochloride is very low, the likelihood of an effect on fertility is extremely low.

Children. The preparation Eucabal drops and Eucabal spray should not be used to treat children under 12 years of age.

Eucabal drops for children are not used in children under the age of 2 years. The use of the preparation in children aged 2–11 years is recommended only under adult supervision.

The ability to influence the reaction rate when driving or operating other mechanisms. Usually, the preparation does not have or has a minimal effect on the ability to drive vehicles or operate machinery.

Interactions

Xylometazoline can interfere with the action of some antihypertensive preparations, such as β-adrenergic blockers, and some antidepressants, such as tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants.

Overdose

Significant overdose or accidental oral administration of the preparation, especially in children, can cause hypoactivity, blurred vision, headache, agitation, heart rhythm disturbances, insomnia, respiratory depression, and sometimes loss of consciousness. long-term use of the preparation can lead to secondary rhinitis, resistant to treatment.

Treatment is symptomatic.

Storage conditions

At a temperature not exceeding 25 ° c. after opening the bottle, the preparation is suitable for use within 6 months.
