Lactose is a specific food for babies, the main carbohydrate in milk.

Lactose is broken down during metabolism by the own intestinal enzyme lactase into glucose and galactose.

In the first weeks of life, the enzymatic system is characterized by a physiological deficiency of the enzyme lactase, which leads to inadequate absorption of lactose. Fermentation processes occur, causing increased gas formation, the development of intestinal colic in children.
