Pharmacological properties
Prospan is a herbal medicine containing an active substance - dry extract of ivy leaves, the therapeutic effect of which in inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract is based on the secretolytic, mucolytic and antispasmodic action of glycosidic saponins contained in the leaves of this plant. slept reduces the viscosity of sputum, facilitates its discharge.
In a clinical study, the bronchodilator effect of the preparation was noted. Experiments on animals have demonstrated the antispasmodic effect of the preparation. It is assumed that the secretolytic effect is caused by irritation of the gastric mucosa by reflex stimulation of the mucous glands of the bronchi through sensory parasympatholytic fibers.
In vitro immunohistochemical and biophysical studies have demonstrated inhibition of β2-receptor uptake by α-hederin - even under strong stimulation conditions - in type II alveolar epithelial cells.
Indications
Symptomatic treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases of the bronchi; acute inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, accompanied by a cough.
Application
Prospan forte effervescent cough tablets. adults and children over the age of 12 are prescribed 1 effervescent tablet (65 mg of dry extract of ivy leaves) 2 times a day, children aged 6-12 years - ½ effervescent tablet (32.5 mg of dry extract of ivy leaves) 3 times per day. the tablets can be broken in half.
Take the tablets in the morning (afternoon) and in the evening, after dissolving them in a glass of water (about 100-200 ml). You can use either hot or cold water to dissolve the tablets.
The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor in each case, taking into account the nature and severity of the course of the disease.
Children. The preparation is not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age.
Cough syrup spilled. In infants and children aged 1 to 6 years, the preparation is administered orally 2.5 ml 3 times a day, in children 6-10 years old - 5 ml 3 times a day, in adults and children over 10 years old - 5–7.5 ml 3 times a day using the supplied measuring cup. The syrup should be applied in the morning, afternoon and evening.
The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor individually. In mild cases, the duration of treatment is 1 week. To achieve a stable therapeutic effect, it is recommended to continue therapy for another 2-3 days after the patient's condition improves.

Cough solution spilled. For adults and children over the age of 12, the solution is prescribed 1 stick (5 ml) 3 times a day, which corresponds to 105 mg of dry ivy leaf extract, for children 6-11 years old - 1 stick (5 ml) 2 times a day , which corresponds to 70 mg of ivy leaf dry extract.

The solution must be taken undiluted in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening.

Cough drops spilled. Adults and children over the age of 10 are prescribed 24 drops 3 times a day; children aged 4-10 years - 16 drops 3 times a day; children aged 1 to 4 years - 12 drops 3 times a day.
The drops should be used before meals. Children are advised to give drops with a little fruit juice.
The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor individually. Usually the course of treatment is 7 days. To achieve a stable therapeutic effect, treatment with the preparation is recommended to continue for another 2-3 days after the symptoms of the disease disappear. If the symptoms of the disease persist or, conversely, the condition worsens, you should consult your doctor.
Children. The preparation is not recommended for use in children under 1 year of age.
Prospan lozenges for coughing. Adults and children over the age of 12 years take 1 tablet 4 times a day, dissolving in the oral cavity (104 mg of dry ivy leaf extract per day), children aged 6-12 years - 1 tablet each (52 mg of dry ivy leaf extract ) 2 times a day.
The duration of treatment depends on the nature and severity of the symptoms of the disease and is usually 1 week, even in the case of mild airway inflammation.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any of the components of the preparation.
Prospan cough syrup: fructose intolerance.
Prospan cough drops: alcoholism and other conditions in which alcohol intake is contraindicated.
Side effects
Very rarely (1/10 000), a laxative effect may occur (due to the sorbitol content). very rarely (1/10 000) allergic reactions are possible.
In patients with hypersensitivity, gastrointestinal upset may occur.
If any adverse reactions occur, you should stop treatment and consult your doctor.
Special instructions
If the symptoms of the disease persist for a long time, or if suffocation, fever and purulent or bloody sputum appear, you should immediately consult a doctor.
Prospan Forte effervescent cough tablets. Each effervescent tablet contains 6.58 mmol (or 151.33 mg) sodium. This should be taken into account when using the preparation in patients on a diet with limited sodium ions (low sodium / low salt content). The fragrance contained in the tablets contains lactose (29.7 mg in 1 effervescent tablet). Patients with rare hereditary galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency and glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this preparation. In case of fructose intolerance, treatment should be carried out only after consulting a doctor.
1 effervescent tablet contains 0.04 XE, which should be taken into account by patients with diabetes mellitus.
Cough solution spilled. The preparation contains sorbitol. If used as directed, the patient will receive up to 1.9 g of sorbitol with each dose. There is a risk for patients with congenital fructose intolerance. In this case, treatment should be carried out only after consulting a doctor.
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose of the preparation.
Prospan cough drops: the preparation contains 47% alcohol by volume. The recommended daily dose should not be exceeded.
Prospan Cough Lozenges: Patients with rare hereditary fructose intolerance should not take this preparation. 1 tablet contains 0.53 g of maltitol and 0.53 g of sorbitol, which is equivalent to about 0.09 XE, which should be taken into account by patients with diabetes mellitus.
Use during pregnancy and lactation. There is no experience of using the preparation during pregnancy or lactation.
