Pharmacological properties

Acyclovir is an antiviral preparation with high in vitro activity against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2. the toxic effect on the cells of the host organism is minimal. getting into cells infected with the herpes virus, acyclovir is phosphorylated to form an active compound - acyclovir triphosphate. the first step in this process depends on the presence of virus-coded thymidine kinase. Acyclovir triphosphate acts as an inhibitor and substrate for viral DNA polymerase, preventing further viral DNA synthesis without affecting normal cellular processes.

Pharmacokinetic studies have shown a minimum level of systemic absorption of acyclovir after repeated topical application of Zovirax cream.

Indications

Infections of the lips and face caused by the herpes simplex virus (herpes labialis).

Application

The preparation is intended for external use only.

For children over 12 years of age and adults, Zovirax cream should be applied 5 times a day at approximately 4-hour intervals, excluding at night. It is important to start treatment as soon as possible at the onset of the infection, ideally during the prodromal period.

Treatment should last at least 4 days. If healing does not occur, treatment can be continued for up to 10 days. If symptoms persist after 10 days of treatment, the patient should see a doctor.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to acyclovir and other components of the preparation, as well as to valacyclovir.

Side effects

In some patients, when using Zovirax cream, a temporary, rapidly passing sharp or burning pain may appear. approximately 5% of patients reported mild dryness and flaking of the skin. in a small proportion of patients, redness (erythema) and itching. very rare cases of contact dermatitis have been reported after applying the cream. in susceptibility tests, these cases were more likely to be associated with the components of the cream base than with acyclovir. there are isolated reports of immediate hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema, due to topical application of acyclovir.

Necessary safety measures during application. Avoid accidental eye contact.

Patients with herpes of the lips should be warned against contact transmission of the virus to others, especially in the presence of open lesions.

Special instructions

Zovirax cream should only be used to treat cold sores on the lips and face. it is not recommended to apply Zovirax cream to the mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes and to use it for the treatment of genital herpes. persons with especially severe manifestations of herpes labialis need medical advice.

Zovirax cream is not recommended for use in immunocompromised patients. Such individuals need medical advice regarding the treatment of any infection.

Application during pregnancy or lactation. During pregnancy and lactation, the preparation is recommended to be used only when the benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk.

Children. There is insufficient data on the safety of the preparation in children under 12 years of age, therefore it is recommended to use the preparation in children over 12 years of age.

Overdose

In case of accidental oral or topical application of the entire tube of Zovirax cream weighing 2 g, containing 100 mg of acyclovir, no adverse effect was detected.
