Indications

Symptomatic treatment of allergic rhinitis (including perennial allergic rhinitis) and urticaria.

Active ingredients

Levocetirizine is an active stable r-enantiomer of cetirizine, which belongs to the group of competitive histamine antagonists. the pharmacological action is due to the blocking of n 1 -histamine receptors. the affinity for n 1 -histamine receptors in levocetirizine is 2 times higher than that of cetirizine. affects the histamine-dependent stage of the development of an allergic reaction, reduces the migration of eosinophils, vascular permeability, and limits the release of inflammatory mediators. prevents the development and facilitates the course of allergic reactions, has an antiexudative, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory effect, practically does not have an anticholinergic and antiserotonin effect.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to levocetirizine, cetirizine, hydroxyzine, to any other piperazine derivatives or to any other excipient of the drug.

Severe chronic renal failure (creatinine clearance <10 ml / min).

Rare hereditary diseases of galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency or impaired absorption of glucose and galactose.

Method of administration and dosage

The drug is prescribed for adults and children over 6 years of age.

Recommended doses:

Adults and children over 12 years of age: the daily dose is 5 mg (1 coated tablet) once a day.

Children aged 6 to 12 years: The recommended daily dose is 5 mg (1 coated tablet).

For children from 2 to 6 years old, it is impossible to adjust the dose of the drug in the dosage form, a film-coated tablet. It is recommended to prescribe levocetirizine in a dosage form intended for use in pediatrics.

Mode of application

Take the pill by mouth, with or without food. the tablet must be swallowed whole with a little water. it is recommended to apply the daily dose at one time.

Duration of use

Patients with recurrent allergic rhinitis (duration of symptoms of the disease is less than 4 days per week or for less than 4 weeks per year) should be treated according to the disease and history; treatment can be discontinued if symptoms disappear and can be restored if symptoms recur. in the case of persistent allergic rhinitis (the duration of the symptoms of the disease is more than 4 days a week and for more than 4 weeks a year) during the period of contact with allergens, the patient can be offered continuous therapy. There is clinical experience with the use of levocetirizine for at least 6 months of treatment ...

In chronic diseases (chronic allergic rhinitis, chronic urticaria), the duration of treatment is up to 1 year (Data are available from clinical studies with the use of cetirizine (racemate)).

Overdose

Symptoms: Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness in adults and initial agitation and irritability followed by drowsiness in children.

Treatment. There is no specific antidote for levocetirizine. In case of symptoms of an overdose, symptomatic and supportive therapy is recommended. Consideration should be given to the need for gastric lavage shortly after taking the drug. Hemodialysis is not effective for removing levocetirizine from the body.

Side effects

From the nervous system: drowsiness, headache, fatigue, weakness, asthenia, convulsions, paresthesia, dizziness, fainting, tremor, dysgeusia. from the side of the psyche: sleep disturbance, agitation, hallucinations, depression, aggression, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, nightmares. from the heart: increased heart rate, tachycardia. on the part of the organs of vision: visual impairment, blurred vision, oculogyration. from the organs of hearing and balance: vertigo. from the liver and biliary tract: hepatitis. from the kidneys and urinary system: dysuria, urinary retention. from the immune system: hypersensitivity, including anaphylaxis. from the respiratory system, chest and mediastinal organs: shortness of breath. from the gastrointestinal tract: diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth, nausea, abdominal pain. on the part of the skin and subcutaneous tissues: angioedema, persistent drug rash, itching, rash, urticaria. from the musculoskeletal system, connective tissue and bones: myalgia, arthralgia. research results: weight gain, abnormal liver function. nutritional and metabolic disorders: increased appetite. general disorders: edema.

The drug should be discontinued if any of the above side effects appear and when the cause of its development cannot be unambiguously established.

Special instructions

Use during pregnancy or lactation

Levocetirizine is contraindicated during pregnancy. levocetirizine passes into breast milk, therefore, if necessary, use of the drug, breastfeeding should be discontinued.

Fertility

There are no clinical data (including animal studies) on the effect of levocetirizine on fertility.

Children

The drug in the form of tablets should not be used in children under 6 years of age, since this dosage form does not allow the necessary adjustment of the dosage regimen. This category of patients is recommended to use levocetirizine in a dosage form suitable for use in pediatrics.

The ability to influence the reaction rate when driving or driving other mechanisms

You should refrain from driving or operating machinery during treatment.
