From the skin and subcutaneous tissue: often - hypersensitivity reactions at the site of application, including urticaria, itching, erythema, burning, rash, eczema, dry skin.

From the immune system: very rarely - systemic allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, generalized rash, urticaria and angioedema.

From the nervous system: headache, dizziness.

From the digestive tract: nausea, abdominal pain, ulcerative stomatitis.

In the event of single hypersensitivity reactions or severe local irritation when applying the ointment / cream, treatment should be discontinued, the skin area should be washed with water to remove residual ointment / cream and an alternative preparation should be prescribed to treat the lesion.

As with the treatment of other antibacterial preparations, prolonged use of the ointment / cream can lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms, including fungal microflora.

There are reports of pseudomembranous colitis with antibiotics, which can range from mild to life-threatening. Therefore, it is important to consider this diagnosis in patients who develop diarrhea during antibiotic use, although this is unlikely with topical mupirocin. If diarrhea is prolonged or severe, or the patient experiences abdominal pain, treatment should be stopped immediately and a diagnosis should be made.

Renal failure. Elderly patients: there are no restrictions on the use, unless during treatment there are conditions for the absorption of polyethylene glycol, which is part of the Bactroban ointment, and signs of moderate or severe renal insufficiency.

Bactroban ointment should not be used:

Bactroban cream can not be used intranasally and for the treatment of eye diseases.

Avoid getting the ointment/cream in the eyes. If this happens, the eyes should be thoroughly rinsed with water until the ointment/cream residue is completely removed.

Polyethylene glycol can be absorbed through a wound or through other types of skin lesions and excreted by the kidneys. Like other polyethylene glycol-based ointments, Bactroban should not be used in conditions of increased absorption of polyethylene glycol, especially in moderate to severe renal insufficiency.

Bactroban cream contains cetyl alcohol and stearic alcohol. These inactive ingredients may cause local skin reactions (eg contact dermatitis).

During pregnancy and breastfeeding. Fertility. Data on the effect of the preparation on human fertility are not available. Animal studies have shown no evidence of an effect on fertility.

Pregnancy. Animal reproduction studies with mupirocin showed no evidence of adverse effects on the fetus.
