Pharmacological properties

Eucazolin aqua refers to non-selective α-adrenergic agonists. when applied to the nasal mucosa, it has an anti-edema effect, reduces hyperemia and exudation, which helps to facilitate nasal breathing, and reduce blood flow in the venous sinuses.

The preparation has a predominantly local effect, is absorbed through the mucous membrane with normal use in a small amount. The action of the preparation begins in 5-10 minutes and lasts for 5-6 hours.

Indications

Symptomatic treatment of nasal congestion with ARVI, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis.

To facilitate the outflow of secretions in diseases of the paranasal sinuses.

Adjunctive therapy for otitis media (to reduce swelling of the nasal mucosa).

With diagnostic interventions (rhinoscopy).

Application

For topical use. immediately before use, you must hold the bottle with the preparation in the palm of your hand to warm it up to body temperature.

Adults and children over the age of 10 - 1 injection into each nasal passage 3-4 times a day.

The course of treatment depends on the course of the disease and should not exceed 10 days in a row.

After the end of the course of treatment, the preparation can be prescribed again only after a few days and after consulting a doctor. The duration of treatment in children is determined individually.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any of the preparations components, acute coronary diseases, coronary asthma, hyperthyroidism, angle-closure glaucoma, transsphenoidal hypophysectomy, or a history of transnasal / transoral surgical interventions with exposure of the dura mater. concomitant treatment with MAO inhibitors and for 2 weeks after discontinuation of their use.

Side effects

Possible side effects: burning in the nose or throat, tingling, dry nose, sneezing, nausea, shortness of breath, angioedema. in isolated cases, systemic allergic reactions are possible. with prolonged use or frequent use of high concentrations, there may be swelling of the nasal mucosa, manifestations of a resorptive effect in the form of dizziness, headache, insomnia, vomiting, increased blood pressure, palpitations, heart rhythm disturbances, short-term visual impairment. with especially prolonged use of the preparation in high doses, a depressive state may develop.

Special instructions

The preparation should not be used continuously for a long period (more than 10 days in a row) with chronic rhinitis. long-term preparation therapy can lead to the opposite effect. do not exceed the recommended dose of the preparation, especially when treating children and elderly patients.

The preparation should be prescribed with caution to patients who, when using adrenergic preparations, experience severe adverse reactions, manifested in the form of insomnia, dizziness, tremor, cardiac arrhythmias, increased blood pressure.

The preparation should be prescribed with caution to patients with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, and difficulty urinating.

Due to the vasoconstrictor effect of the preparation, an increase in intraocular pressure is possible.

Each pack of drops or spray should only be used by one person to avoid infection.

Pregnancy and lactation period: the preparation  should not be used during pregnancy.

It is not known whether xylometazoline penetrates into breast milk, therefore, women who are breastfeeding can only use the preparation when, in the opinion of the doctor, the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the baby.

Children. Eucazolin Aqua is used in children over the age of 10 years.

The ability to influence the reaction rate when driving or working with other mechanisms. The preparation does not affect the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms when used in recommended doses, but the likelihood of temporary visual impairment should be taken into account.

Interactions

Eucazolin aqua interacts with other preparations only if there is a resorptive effect. adrenergic agonists of other groups enhance the effect of eucazolin aqua. adrenolytics and sympatholytics, calcium ion antagonists reduce its effect.

The combined administration of MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants can lead to an increase in blood pressure due to the effect of these preparations on the cardiovascular system.

Overdose

With too frequent use of the preparation in an increased concentration, symptoms of an overdose may appear in the form of headache, dry nose, nausea, depression, increased blood pressure, short-term visual impairment. it is necessary to stop using the preparation and take antagonist preparations (sympatholytics and blockers of α-adrenergic receptors (phentolamine, tropafen)), and conduct symptomatic therapy.

If the preparation is accidentally drunk, it is necessary to rinse the stomach, take laxatives and enterosorbents. Treatment with α-adrenergic receptor blockers is indicated; symptomatic therapy.
