Pharmacological properties

Farmazolin belongs to non-selective alpha-adrenergic agonists, which locally narrow the vessels of the mucous membrane and reduce the severity of inflammation. when applied to the nasal mucosa, it has an anti-edema effect, reduces hyperemia and exudation, which helps to facilitate nasal breathing, and reduce blood flow in the venous sinuses.

The preparation has a predominantly local effect, it is absorbed through the mucous membranes with normal use in small quantities. The action of the preparation begins in 5-10 minutes and lasts for 5-6 hours.

Indications

Reducing the severity of symptoms of acute rhinitis of various etiologies, sinusitis; auxiliary therapy for acute otitis media (to reduce swelling of the nasal mucosa); with diagnostic interventions (rhinoscopy).

Application

When using a polyethylene bottle, screw the cap as much as possible before the first use. the spike, which is located on the inside of the cap, pierces the hole. the cap is unscrewed, removed and, slightly pressing on the body of the bottle, the solution is instilled into the nose.

When using a polyethylene bottle with disclosure control, immediately before use, the bottle must be held in the palm of your hand to warm it up to body temperature. After instillation, screw the cap tightly.

Solution 0.05%: children from 3 months to 6 years old are instilled 1-2 drops in each nasal passage 1-2 times a day (no more than 3 times a day). The duration of treatment depends on the course of the disease and is no more than 10 days in a row.

Solution 0.1%: for adults and children over 6 years old, 2-3 drops are instilled into each nasal passage 3-4 times a day.

The course of treatment depends on the course of the disease and should not exceed 10 days in a row. After the end of the course of treatment, the preparation can be prescribed again only after several days.

Farmazolin 0.05% is advisable to prescribe to patients who have not previously used vasoconstrictor preparations, and children under the age of 6 years. In case of insufficient effectiveness, they switch to a higher concentration of the preparation (solution 0.1%).

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation, pregnancy, transsphenoidal hypophysectomy, or a history of transnasal / transoral surgery with exposure of the dura mater.

Side effects

Side effects are possible in the form of burning, tingling, dry nose, sneezing, nausea, shortness of breath, angioedema. in isolated cases, systemic allergic reactions are possible. with prolonged use or frequent use of high concentrations, there may be swelling of the nasal mucosa, manifestations of a resorptive effect in the form of dizziness, headache, insomnia, vomiting, increased blood pressure, palpitations, heart rhythm disturbances, short-term visual impairment. with especially prolonged use of the preparation in high doses, a depressive state may develop.

Special instructions

The preparation should not be used continuously for long periods (more than 10 days in a row) for chronic rhinitis. long-term treatment with the preparation can cause the opposite effect.

The recommended dose of the preparation should not be exceeded, especially when treating children and the elderly.

It is necessary to prescribe the preparation with caution to patients with cardiovascular diseases, patients with hypertension, angle-closure glaucoma, diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, patients who, when using adrenergic preparations, have strong reactions manifested in the form of insomnia, dizziness, tremor, cardiac arrhythmia, increase in blood pressure.

Due to the vasoconstrictor effect of the preparation, an increase in intraocular pressure is possible.

Use during pregnancy and lactation. The preparation should not be used during pregnancy.

It is not known whether xylometazoline is excreted in breast milk, therefore, during breastfeeding, the preparation can be used only if, in the opinion of the doctor, the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the child.

The ability to influence the reaction rate when driving or working with other mechanisms. The preparation does not affect the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms when used in recommended doses.

Children. It is not recommended to use the preparation in newborns under the age of 3 months.

For the treatment of newborns older than 3 months and children under 1 year of age, the preparation is used only as directed by a doctor.

Farmazolin 0.05% solution is indicated for children under 6 years of age.

Farmazolin 0.1% solution is indicated for children over the age of 6 years.

Interactions

Farmazolin interacts with other preparations only if there is a resorptive effect. adrenergic agonists of other groups enhance the effect of pharmacoline. adrenolytics and sympatholytics, calcium antagonists weaken its effect. the preparation enhances the hypertensive effect of tricyclic antidepressants and MAO inhibitors on the cardiovascular system.

Overdose

With too frequent instillation or use of the preparation in high concentration, symptoms of an overdose may appear in the form of headache, dry nose, nausea, depression, increased blood pressure, short-term visual impairment. it is necessary to stop using the preparation and take antagonist preparations: sympatholytics and blockers of α-adrenergic receptors (phentolamine, tropafen), symptomatic therapy. if the preparation is accidentally drunk, it is necessary to flush the stomach, take laxatives and enterosorbents, treat with α-adrenergic receptor blockers, symptomatic therapy.
