Interactions

Since interactions with the medicinal products listed below cannot be ruled out, special care should be taken when administering Ginkoflav Med. The effect of these drugs may be enhanced when used concomitantly with anticoagulants (e.g. acenocoumarol and warfarin) or antiplatelet drugs (e.g. clopidogrel, acetylsalicylic acid and other NSAIDs). The available studies do not indicate any interaction with warfarin, however, appropriate monitoring is recommended when initiating Ginkgo biloba therapy, ending this therapy, changing the dosage or changing the product containing ginkgo biloba extract. Interaction studies with talinolol indicate that Ginkgo biloba may inhibit P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in intestinal cells. This may result in an increase in the availability of drugs that are significantly transported by P-gp in the gut, such as dabigatran. Caution is advised when using dabigatran and ginkgo biloba extract simultaneously. An interaction study with nifedipine suggested that ginkgo biloba extract may increase the maximum blood concentration (cmax) of this drug. Some study participants experienced a twofold increase in the peak concentration of nifedipine, leading to dizziness and an increase in symptoms such as hot flush. Concomitant use of ginkgo biloba extract and efavirenz products is not recommended. Efavirenz plasma concentrations may be decreased due to induction of the enzyme CYP3A4.

Warnings and Precautions

In patients with blood coagulation disorders (haemorrhagic diathesis) and in people taking antiplatelet drugs or anticoagulants, this medicinal product should not be used without consulting a doctor, as it cannot be ruled out that the medicinal product may affect the occurrence of bleeding. In the event of a planned surgery, you should inform your doctor that you are taking this medicinal product. It is recommended to stop the administration of the product 3 - 4 days before the planned surgery. It cannot be excluded that products containing ginkgo biloba extract may affect the risk of seizures in people with epilepsy. Concomitant use of Ginkgo biloba-containing products and efavirenz-containing products is not recommended. Children and adolescents: There are no data on safety and efficacy in children and adolescents. The product is not intended for use in children and adolescents. Pregnancy: Ginkgo biloba may inhibit platelet aggregation and increase the risk of bleeding. Animal studies are insufficient with respect to reproductive toxicity. Ginkoflav Med is contraindicated during pregnancy. Breast-feeding There is insufficient information on the excretion of ginkgo biloba extract and its metabolites in human milk. A risk to the newborns cannot be excluded.
