Hederasal syrup is a herbal medicine with a comprehensive effect, the active substance of which is the dry extract of ivy leaves (Hederae helicis foli extractum siccum), which has an expectorant effect and relaxes the smooth muscles of the bronchi. This component reduces the frequency of coughing attacks and reduces the accompanying pain. Thanks to the thinning of the secretion in the throat, larynx and bronchi, it facilitates expectoration, while easing the cough reflex and not blocking it.

Indications

A herbal preparation used as an expectorant in the case of a wet cough accompanied by difficult expectoration of the residual thick secretion.

Composition

100 g (corresponding to 81 ml) of the syrup contains:

active ingredient: ivy leaf dry extract (Hederae helicis foli extractum siccum, DER 4-8: 1) - 430.55 mg, extractant: ethanol 30% m / m.

excipients: potassium sorbate, anise essential oil, propylene glycol, non-crystallising liquid sorbitol 70%, purified water.

Action

The preparation has a triple potency:

• works expectorant,
• thins the residual secretion,
• relaxes the bronchial tubes.

Dosage

Oral use. A measuring cup is included in the package. Take the syrup undiluted, wash it down with water.

Children aged 2 to 5 years: 2 to 3 times a day with a measuring spoon of 2.5 ml or half a teaspoon.

Children aged 6 to 11: 2 times a day with a measuring spoon of 5 ml or 1 teaspoon each.

Adults and adolescents from 12 years of age: 3 to 4 times a day with a measuring spoon of 5 ml or 1 teaspoon each.

Advice for diabetics: the preparation does not contain sucrose. It can be used by people with diabetes. 1 teaspoon (5 ml corresponds to 6.2 g) of the syrup contains 3.36 g of Dsorbitol, which corresponds to 0.28 Bread Units (BE).

Contraindications

The preparation should not be used in patients allergic to the active substance, including Araliaceae plants or any of the excipients.

The preparation should not be used in children under 2 years of age as respiratory symptoms may worsen when taking expectorant preparations.

The preparation is not intended for children under 2 years of age.

Storage

Keep the preparation out of the sight and reach of children. Do not store above 25 degrees C. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the package. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines no longer required. Such behavior will help to protect the environment.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Hederasal can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Their frequency is unknown.

If any of the possible side effects occur, consult a doctor immediately and stop taking the preparation.

When using Hederasal syrup, the following may occur:

• stomach and intestinal disorders such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting,
• disorders of the immune system in the form of allergic reactions: rashes, hives, shortness of breath.

Interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medications you are taking now or in the near future, as well as about medications you plan to take.

Interactions with other preparations are unknown.

Warnings and Precautions

Before using Hederasal, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

In the case of persistent or recurrent cough in children aged 2 to 4 years, it is necessary to be diagnosed by a doctor before starting the use of Hederasal syrup.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you experience shortness of breath, fever, or bloody or purulent sputum.

It is not recommended to use Hederasal together with opioid antitussives such as codeine or dextromethorphan without consulting your doctor first.

In patients with gastritis or gastric ulcer disease, caution is advised when taking this medicine.

The preparation contains sorbitol. Patients with known intolerance to some sugars should contact their doctor before taking the preparation. One dose of the preparation contains 4.935 g of sorbitol.

If symptoms persist for more than a week while taking this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Do not exceed the recommended doses for consumption, as this may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and agitation. If you take more than the recommended dose of the preparation and experience side effects, consult your doctor.

If a dose is missed, treatment should be continued. Do not make up a missed dose with a double dose to make up.

Discontinuation of treatment with Hederasal syrup may increase the difficulty in coughing up the remaining thick secretion in the throat, larynx and bronchi.

Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

The safety of this medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been established, however, due to the lack of data, it is not recommended to take it during this period.

The effect of the preparation on fertility is unknown.

Driving vehicles and operating machinery

No studies on the effects of the product on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed.

There is no evidence that medicinal products containing ivy leaf extracts affect the ability to drive or use machines.
