The most common symptoms are gastrointestinal complaints. Large doses of the preparation may have a mild laxative effect.

Allergic reactions after taking Magnezin cannot be ruled out, but such reactions have not been described so far. Serious side effects associated with the use of Magnezin have not been described. Side effects associated with the use of Magnezin are listed below.

Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people) are:

  • soft stools, nausea, vomiting.

Interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the preparations you are taking or have recently taken, and about any preparations you plan to take.

Magnesium administered concomitantly with: tetracyclines (for example doxycycline), preparations containing iron, fluoroquinolones (for example ciprofloxacin) and some oral anticoagulants (anti-coagulants) reduces the absorption of these preparations and may reduce their effectiveness.

The listed preparations and substances reduce the absorption of magnesium from the gut and may reduce the effectiveness of Magnezin: phosphates, high doses of calcium, phytates, a large amount of fat in the diet.

These preparations increase the urinary excretion of magnesium and may reduce the effectiveness of Magnezin: loop diuretics (i.e. some diuretics, for example furosemide), aminoglycoside antibiotics (for example gentamicin), some hormonal preparations (ask your doctor for details), some anti-cancer preparations ( ask your doctor for details), amphotericin B (antifungal medicine).

Intravenous calcium salts weaken the effect of MAGNESIN, while vitamin B6 enhances its effect.

This medicine contains less than 1 mmol (23 mg) sodium per tablet, that is to say essentially 'sodium-free'.

Warnings and Precautions

If the patient is diagnosed with impaired kidney function, Magnezin should be used with caution, with regular tests of magnesium levels in the blood. Using this medicine can lead to a build-up of an excessive amount of magnesium in the body.

Magnesium administered in a dose exceeding 2 g per day may have a laxative effect.

Consult your doctor, even if the above warnings apply to situations in the past.

Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility:

  • if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Driving and using machines:

  • Magnesine has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.

Magnezin with food and drink:

  • Avoid taking the preparation with or immediately after meals containing foods rich in calcium and fats, as these may reduce the absorption of the preparation.
