Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics. Benzalkonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium that has spermicidal and antiseptic properties. its contraceptive effect is associated with the ability to destroy sperm membranes. upon contact of the active substance of Pharmatex with spermatozoa, their immediate immobilization occurs due to a significant violation of the surface tension of the sperm membrane, loss of the flagellum, lysis of the membrane of the sperm head with its destruction and later - detachment of the head. strengthening of the contraceptive effect is provided by coagulation and thickening of cervical mucus with Pharmatex, thus creating an additional barrier for ejaculate to enter the uterine cavity.

The preparation also has an antiseptic and antimicrobial effect, reduces the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections, but does not completely exclude it.

Does not affect libido and fertility.

Contraceptive efficacy is measured by the Pearl Index and it is clinically proven that for Pharmatex it is 1. That is, if it is used correctly and all requirements are met, the frequency of unwanted pregnancy is about 1% per year.

After stopping the use of the preparation, the possibility of conception is restored.

According to the results of many studies, it has been established that the preparation does not penetrate into blood plasma and breast milk (when used in recommended doses) due to the lack of absorption of benzalkonium chloride by the vaginal mucosa. This indicates that the effect of the preparation is exclusively local.

Indications

Local contraception. this method of contraception can be used by all women of reproductive age. the remedy is used both independently and in combination with other methods, which enhances their contraceptive effect.

The use of Pharmatex is advisable:

• if there are temporary or permanent contraindications for oral contraception or intrauterine systems, for example, after childbirth, during lactation, after termination of pregnancy and during menopause;
• if necessary, episodic prevention of pregnancy (irregular sex life);
• when using oral contraception, if a woman has forgotten or is late to take a pill (in this case, it is necessary to additionally use Pharmatex on any days of the cycle);
• as an adjuvant for barrier contraception (vaginal diaphragm) or the presence of an intrauterine system, especially with the simultaneous use of certain preparations (eg NSAIDs).

Application

Cream. before applying the cream, install the dosing applicator on the end of the tube. fill it completely (up to the ring-shaped mark) so that no air bubbles form. disconnect the tube from the applicator and insert the cream as deep as possible into the vagina, slowly pressing the plunger. the protective effect of the cream begins immediately and lasts 10 hours, protecting the woman for one sexual intercourse. in case of repeated intercourse, a new dose of Pharmatex cream must be administered.

The number of doses that can be used throughout the day is not limited.

Suppositories. Remove the protective packaging from the suppository. In the prone position, insert it as deeply as possible into the vagina. The suppository dissolves 5 minutes after administration and lasts for 4 hours, the contraceptive effect lasts for one sexual intercourse. In case of repeated intercourse, a new suppository Pharmatex must be introduced.

Application features:

The action of the preparation begins 10 minutes after administration and lasts at least 3 hours. In case of repeated intercourse, you must enter the next pill (regardless of the time that has passed since the previous administration of the preparation).

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity (allergic reactions or irritation) to the components of the preparation, vaginitis, ulcers and irritation of the vaginal mucosa and cervix. the inability to correctly use vaginal tablets by persons with mental disabilities and persons who do not allow any interventions on the genitals, or those who are unable to understand and accept this type of contraception.

Side effects

During the use of Pharmatex according to the indications, the risk of side effects is minimal, but patients with hypersensitivity to the components of the preparation may experience allergic reactions, irritation, tingling, a feeling of warmth at the injection site, as well as contact dermatitis, itching and burning in the vagina and / or partner's penis, painful urination. in case of their occurrence, it is necessary to stop using Pharmatex.

special instructions

The effectiveness of contraception depends on the correct use of the preparation. after intercourse and for 2 hours before and 2 hours after intercourse, it is allowed to carry out an external toilet using clean water or a product that does not contain soap and is compatible with local contraceptives Pharmatex (for example, a foam product). douching, as well as washing in a bath or in a pond, is possible no earlier than 2 hours after intercourse in order to prevent the preparation from washing out with water.

In case of diseases of the vagina, the use of Pharmatex should be temporarily discontinued until the end of treatment with vaginal preparations.

Use during pregnancy and lactation. Since the preparation is a contraceptive, its use is impractical during pregnancy. When pregnancy occurs against the background of benzalkonium chloride contraception, no effect on the course of pregnancy has been identified.

The preparation does not penetrate into breast milk and can be used during breastfeeding.

Children. The preparation Pharmatex is not prescribed for children.

Interactions

The simultaneous use of Pharmatex with other intravaginal preparations is not recommended: any other preparations injected into the vagina can reduce the contraceptive effect of Pharmatex.

Benzalkonium chloride is destroyed by soap, therefore Pharmatex is incompatible with soap even in minimal amounts.
