Sopharma AD has nine EU compliant manufacturing plants located in Bulgaria. The company is the largest Bulgarian manufacturer of ampoules and suppositories.

The production activities of the company are carried out and developed in the following main directions:

• Substances and preparations based on plant raw materials (phytochemical production);
• Finished dosage forms, incl.
• Hard tablets, coated tablets, film-coated tablets, capsules;
• Galenic - suppositories, drops, syrups, ointments;
• Parenteral - injection solutions, lyophilic powders for injection.

The company has in its portfolio more than 200 preparations: mainly generics and 15 original preparations, 12 of which are plant-based. The Company's original preparations (and in particular Tabex, Karsil and Tempalgin) are the main contributors to its revenues from export markets, while the company's generic preparations are of the greatest importance for sales on the local market, among which Analgin is in first place.

The product portfolio of Sopharma AD is focused on the following therapeutic areas: cardiology, gastroenterology, pain management, cough and cold, immunology and dermatology, respiratory tract and asthma, neurology and psychiatry, urology and gynecology.

The most significant pharmaceuticals in terms of their contribution to revenue are:

Karsil is a traditional herbal medicine used to treat gastroenterological diseases (liver diseases);

Tempalgin is a traditional analgesic (pain reliever);

Tabex is a traditional herbal medicine against smoking;

Tribestan is a traditional herbal preparation that stimulates the functions of the reproductive system;

Bronholitin is a traditional herbal medicine used to suppress coughs;

Analgin is a generic analgesic (pain reliever);

Nivalin is a traditional herbal medicine used to treat diseases of the peripheral nervous system;

Methylprednisolone is a generic preparation intended for use in cases of severe allergies and certain life-threatening conditions;

Vitamin C is a dietary supplement with widespread use;

Valerian is an over-the-counter, generic herbal remedy used to reduce stress.

Intellectual property

Despite the fact that Sopharma AD focuses on the production of generic pharmaceuticals, it has been known for many years for the traditional production of several unique preparations based on plant extracts obtained using its own developed technologies. These preparations are protected in addition to the trademark, and patent or proprietary know-how.

With regard to manufactured generic preparations, for their recognition on the market, Sopharma JSC relies on the brand names that are registered trade marks of the company.

Throughout the years of its existence, Sopharma AD has been generating and protecting its industrial property. As a result, the company owns a large number of industrial property objects, a significant part of which is represented by registered rights (brands, patents, designs) and a smaller part - unregistered objects - mainly technologies.

These assets are the result of the company's special policy regarding product and technological renewal, and in particular with regard to innovation.

Research and development activities

Sopharma AD focuses its research and development activities mainly on generic preparations. Research and development projects are aimed at finding and developing new formulas and composition or physical properties (such as dosage form or tablet form) of a preparation in order to adapt it to current market needs. The strategic goal of Sopharma AD is to achieve stable results in the future in the development of eight to ten new preparations per year.

The company mainly applies for approvals for new preparations, including new forms of preparations in Bulgaria and / or export markets, and existing preparations in new markets.

The average number of employees for 2021 at Sopharma JSC is 1,936 (compared to 1991 in 2020).
