UNIAPHARM
The beginnings
The history of Zakłady Farmaceutyczne "UNIA" Spółdzielnia Pracy dates back to pre-war times. On March 25, 1937 at ul. Długa 16 in Warsaw, at the headquarters of the Warsaw Pharmaceutical Society, the first meeting of the later founders of the Pharmacists' Cooperative Purchasing Center took place. On July 20, 1937, the organization was entered in the Register of Cooperatives kept by the District Court in Warsaw under the number RS.XVI.1999. On the other hand, a few months later, on January 28, 1938, he began his activity, which consisted in intermediation between manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and the owners of pharmacies who were also members of the Cooperative.
Post-war survival
The war period significantly limited the functioning of the Headquarters, which was completely destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising. Only thanks to its branches, mainly in Częstochowa and Lublin, it survived the difficult times. After the war, the branch in Kielce was reactivated and a branch in Płock was established. At the end of 1946, due to serious organizational and financial problems, the General Assembly of the Cooperative decides to liquidate the branches, which from the beginning of 1947 were to become separate and independent units. During this period, the Head Office changes its name to Spółdzielnia Farmaceutyczna "UNIA" and starts production. Thanks to this, it gradually expands its range with new specifics. Despite the difficulties in terms of premises, staff and equipment in the Research Laboratory in the 1950s and 1960s, widely used and very popular products such as Eucardin, Belladrinal, Nitrocard, Gastro, Granulofosfat, Pantocid or Emphysal, the recipe of which was created before the war, as well as known and popular Alantan ointment or Alantan backfill are still used today. Some products were exported, including to Cuba and Vietnam. The company has obtained patents for some of them. The cooperative changed its seat several times.
Expansion and development
In 1956, a decision was made to expand the Cooperative. On May 18, 1961, the Foundation Act was signed, initiating the construction of a new Spółdzielczy Zakład Przemysłowy under the name of Farmaceutyczna Spółdzielnia Pracy "UNIA" at ul. Chłodna 56/60, where it begins its operations in 1967. In the same year, he decides to produce aerosols, specializing primarily in the production of valves for aerosol cans. This production is possible thanks to the acquisition of a license for the assembly and production of valves from a foreign partner. "UNIA" becomes a pioneer in this field for the next few years. Thanks to the establishment of the Aerosol Laboratory, the company develops its own production of aerosol preparations from the group of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and household chemicals. As other Polish companies were also interested in valves, in the first half of the 1970s, "UNIA" purchased additional machines and devices for their assembly.
Fate
The second half of the 20th century was a period of major social and political changes in Poland. The existence of the Cooperative was threatened not only by political changes but also by the possibility of being taken over by another company. However, thanks to the conscious and courageous decisions of the management, the company maintained its identity and independence. The versatile production capabilities allow Zakłady Farmaceutyczne "UNIA" Spółdzielnia Pracy to produce products in many pharmaceutical forms such as tablets, liquids, creams, ointments and gels. Focus on continuous development and modernization of technological processes, qualified staff and flexible management focused on achieving success allow us to maintain a very good position among Polish pharmaceutical companies. Since 2008 Zakłady Farmaceutyczne "UNIA" Spółdzielnia Pracy have been awarded the Good Manufacturing Practice Certificate (GMP). Every year, "UNIA" takes part in the CPHI International Pharmaceutical Fair as an exhibitor. Thanks to this, as well as thanks to participation in Industry Programs, in recent years, "UNIA" has gained new markets where it sells its products.
