Pharmacological properties

Escin, the main active component of horse chestnut seed extract, has an antiexudative and vasoconstrictive effect.

Pharmacodynamics. Horse chestnut seed extract reduces the activity of lysosomal enzymes, which increases in chronic venous diseases, as a result of which the degradation of glycocalyx (mucopolysaccharides) on the surface of the capillary walls is suppressed. By reducing vascular permeability, it prevents the filtration of low molecular weight proteins, electrolytes and fluids into the intracellular space.

The preparation eliminates the symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency (fatigue, feeling of heaviness and tension, itching, pain and swelling of the lower extremities).

Indications

Chronic venous insufficiency: edema; night cramps of the calf muscles; itching, as well as pain and a feeling of heaviness in the legs; phlebeurysm.

Application

Adults take 1 prolonged-release tablet 2 times a day in the morning and in the evening before meals, without chewing, with a small amount of liquid. the duration of use is determined by the doctor individually, depending on the severity of the disease and the clinical efficacy of the preparation. the average duration of treatment is 2-3 months.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or any excipient. renal failure.

Side effects

From the nervous system: headache, dizziness.

On the part of the skin, subcutaneous tissues / immune system: hypersensitivity reactions, including rash, itching, feeling of heat, angioedema.

From the side of the cardiovascular system: tachycardia, palpitations, arterial hypotension.

From the digestive tract: dyspeptic symptoms, pain in the epigastric region, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting.

Special instructions

If unusual symptoms such as swelling, discoloration of the skin, feeling of tension or heat, or pain occur in one leg, you should immediately consult a doctor, as these symptoms may indicate serious complications (vein thrombosis of the lower extremities, that is blockage of the veins of the lower extremities with a blood clot). Be sure to use other non-invasive treatments prescribed by your doctor, such as applying compresses to your legs, wearing supportive elastic stockings, or dousing with cold water.

In case of skin inflammation, thrombophlebitis, subcutaneous induration, severe pain, ulcers, sudden swelling of one or both lower extremities, heart or kidney failure, consult your doctor.

In the event of dyspeptic symptoms, it is recommended to switch to the use of the preparation during meals.

When using the preparation, kidney function should be monitored.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding. The preparation is not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation due to insufficient data on the safety of its use in this category of patients.

Children. The preparation is not used in children.

Influence on the ability to drive vehicles or other mechanisms. Unknown.

Interactions

The preparation can enhance the effect of antithrombotic agents. antibiotics of the cephalosporin series increase the concentration of free escin in the blood and the risk of side effects. simultaneous use with aminoglycoside antibiotics should be avoided due to the increased toxic effect of aminoglycosides on the kidneys.

Overdose

Increased side effects are possible. in case of an overdose of the preparation, arterial hypotension, nephrotoxic reactions, thrombosis are possible. symptoms of poisoning observed after taking horse chestnut fruits: a feeling of anxiety, severe diarrhea, accompanied by vomiting; mydriasis, drowsiness, delirium, death is possible as a result of respiratory paralysis in 24-48 hours.

Treatment: if there is no vomiting and a large amount of the preparation was used, gastric lavage is recommended (for example, 0.02% solution of potassium permanganate) and the intake of activated carbon; symptomatic treatment.
