AstraZeneca plc is an Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical company registered in the UK. It is the tenth largest company in the world by sales of prescription drugs as of 2014. The company is ranked 281 in the 2011 Fortune Global 500.
The AstraZeneca product portfolio includes drugs from therapeutic areas such as cardiology, pulmonology, oncology, neurology, gastroenterology, psychiatry, infectious diseases. The company was formed in 1999 through the merger of the Swedish Astra AB and the British Zeneca Group (formed as a result of the separation of the pharmaceutical business from Imperial Chemical Industries in 1993). The company has performed a large number of mergers and acquisitions of other companies such as Cambridge Antibody Technology (in 2006), MedImmune (in 2007) and Spirogen (in 2013).
AstraZeneca was initially listed on the London Stock Exchange. AstraZeneca shares are included in the FTSE 100 Index calculation. AstraZeneca was secondary listed on the New York Stock Exchange and on the OMX.
