Gaviscon Duo is a combination of alginate and two antacids (calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate). Gaviscon Duo works through two mechanisms. The first mechanism neutralizes excess hydrochloric acid in the stomach, relieves pain and discomfort. The second creates a protective barrier over the gastric contents to alleviate the burning sensation in the chest. Gaviscon Duo for use in treating the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux such as acid regurgitation, heartburn and indigestion related to acid reflux, for example after meals or during pregnancy.

1 sachet contains: 500 mg of sodium alginate, 213 mg of sodium bicarbonate and 325 mg of calcium carbonate. The other ingredients are carbomer, methyl (E218) and propyl (E216) parahydroxybenzoate, sodium saccharin, sodium hydroxide, peppermint flavor and purified water.

Neutralizing excess hydrochloric acid, protective to alleviate the burning sensation.

Adults, including the elderly and children 12 years of age and over: one or two sachets after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. Children under 12 years of age: administer only after consulting a doctor.

Keep the preparation out of the sight and reach of children. Do not store above 30 ° C. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the sachet and the carton after “EXP”. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

Very rarely (less than 1 in 10,000 patients) allergic reactions to the ingredients of the preparation may occur. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, itching of the skin, skin rashes, dizziness, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, and difficulty breathing. Consumption of large amounts of the calcium carbonate component of this medicine may increase blood pH (alkalosis), increase blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia), increase stomach acid secretion and constipation. These symptoms usually occur after taking higher doses than recommended. If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist, including any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet.

Do not use this medication within two hours of taking other medications as this may affect the effectiveness of some medications. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the preparations you are taking or have recently taken, and about any preparations you plan to take.

Gaviscon Duo should not be used by patients with severe kidney problems and people with electrolyte disturbances causing low levels of phosphate in the blood (hypophosphataemia). Each sachet (10 ml) of the preparation contains small amounts of sodium 127.25 mg (5.53 nmmol) and calcium 130 mg (3.25 mmol). Patients who require a significant reduction in the supply of these ingredients in the diet should consult a physician before taking the preparation. Please consult your doctor if you have kidney or heart problems as high salt levels increase the risk of these diseases. Please consult your doctor if your stomach produces less acid as this medicine may be less effective. As with other antacids, Gaviscon Duo may mask the symptoms of other, more serious, conditions. You should avoid taking the preparation for a long time. If symptoms persist after 7 days of treatment, please consult your doctor. This preparation  can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The preparation contains methyl (E218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), which may cause allergic reactions (including delayed ones). This medicine contains 127.35 mg (5.53 mmol) sodium in each dose. To be taken into account in patients on a controlled sodium diet. Do not use a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
